How to carry a sun hat without crushing it
A magnetic hat clip is useful when the hat is too structured to pack flat, too damp or sweaty to bury in the bag, or needed again right after transit.
Short answer
If the hat has a structured brim or crown, do not force it into a packed carry-on. Wear it, clip it to the outside of the bag during transit, or use a hard hat carrier if the hat is valuable or fragile.
A travel hat clip is the low-bulk middle option: it keeps a sun hat reachable and out of the clothing stack without making the hat a separate luggage item.
Choose the carry method
Wear the hat when boarding is simple and the brim will not annoy you in a tight seat. Pack the hat only if it is meant to be crushed, rolled, or nested safely with soft clothing. Clip it when you need quick hands-free carry through airports, beach walks, markets, and hotel transfers.
Use a hard carrier for expensive felt, straw, or shaped hats where a crease would ruin the trip. A clip is practical, not protective armor; it prevents bag-crush, but it does not stop someone from leaning hard on the brim in a crowded line.
- Clip: best for ordinary sun hats, baseball caps, beach hats, and travel days when you need the hat again soon.
- Pack: best for crushable hats that are designed to roll or flatten without losing shape.
- Hard carrier: best for delicate, expensive, sentimental, or highly structured hats.
What to check before clipping
Clip the hat by a stable part of the brim, not a decorative trim or loose ribbon. Test it at home by walking, rotating the bag, and setting the bag down. If the hat swings into your knees, catches on doors, or flips upside down, move the clip higher or switch carry methods.
Keep the hat on the outside only while you are actively moving with it. For overhead bins, car trunks, and crowded shuttles, either wear it, hold it, or tuck it into a safer spot.
Mistakes to avoid
Do not clip a wet or sandy hat directly against clothing, electronics, or a light-colored bag panel. Shake it out first and keep it away from zippers that could scrape the brim.
Do not use a magnetic clip as a theft-proof or crush-proof solution. It is an access tool for ordinary travel carry, not a security device or a substitute for a hat box.
Where Field Stow fits
The Field Stow HatDock Travel Clip is for travelers who want to carry a sun hat on a tote, sling, backpack, or carry-on handle instead of crushing it inside the bag.
It pairs well with a packable day bag, bottle sling, or under-seat tote when beach, park, market, and warm-weather travel days need hands-free hat carry.

Details
Can I carry a sun hat on a plane?
Yes. You can wear it, hold it, clip it to a bag while moving, or pack it if the hat is designed to handle compression.
Do travel hat clips actually work?
They work best for ordinary hats during active carry. They are less suitable for delicate hats, heavy wind, or situations where the hat may be crushed by other luggage.
Should I pack a sun hat or use a hat clip?
Pack a crushable hat. Use a clip when the hat has more structure and you need to keep your hands free without adding a hat box.
